Wet Sanding in Helena, MT

Some defects sit too deep for polishing alone. Wet sanding levels the surface by hand or machine with fine abrasives, then compounding and polishing bring the gloss back. It is precise work, and it is a specialty here.

What wet sanding is

Wet sanding uses very fine abrasive paper, kept wet, to level the surface of the paint where defects are too deep or too textured for polishing alone. The sanding leaves a uniform haze, and then compounding and polishing bring that surface back to a deep, clear gloss. Done right, it creates a flatter finish than polishing can.

When wet sanding makes sense

  • Orange peel texture on fresh or older paint jobs
  • Runs, sags and dust nibs left from a repaint
  • Isolated defects too deep for polishing alone
  • Classic and custom vehicles where a flat, mirror-like finish is the goal

Only where the paint allows

Wet sanding removes more material than polishing, so it is never the default. We measure paint thickness in mils before we start and keep checking as we go. We only sand where there is enough clear coat to do it safely. If a defect cannot be leveled without risk, we tell you instead of chasing it.

How it works

  1. MeasurePaint thickness readings show how much material is available on each panel.
  2. LevelFine-grit wet sanding flattens texture, runs and nibs in targeted areas.
  3. CompoundCutting removes the sanding marks and starts bringing back clarity.
  4. RefinePolishing stages finish the surface to a deep gloss.
  5. ProtectWe go over protection options, often a ceramic coating, to keep the result.

Classic and custom vehicles

Classic and custom paint is where wet sanding pays off most. Many older finishes and repaints carry texture and flaws that never got leveled. Our 1970 Chevrolet Caprice project was wet sanded, fully paint corrected and ceramic coated, and it shows what that process can do for an older finish.

Questions

Is wet sanding safe for my paint?

When it is done on paint with enough clear coat and finished properly, yes. We measure before recommending it and skip areas where it would not be safe.

Do you wet sand factory paint?

It can be done on factory paint in the right situations, but it is most common on repaints and classic or custom finishes. We will tell you whether it makes sense for your vehicle.

Does wet sanding always need paint correction after?

Yes. Sanding leaves a uniform haze on purpose, and compounding and polishing are what bring the gloss back.
